About Florence Quantum Labs
Florence Quantum Labs develops quantum-enabled biosensing systems to study and modulate the biochemical foundations of symbiosis between plants, microbes, and fungi. Situated at the interface of quantum photonics, systems biology, and ecological engineering, our work focuses on building scalable infrastructure for real-time ecological intelligence. Our experimental platform is based on microfluidic chips optimized for high-resolution observation of rhizospheric interactions. These devices enable precise control over nutrient flow, microbial inoculation, and chemical signaling within soil-microbe-plant systems, under variable environmental conditions. To interrogate these systems, we deploy nanophotonic biosensors that integrate quantum dots, plasmonic nanoantennas, and photonic crystal cavities. This architecture supports multiplexed, label-free, and subcellular-resolution readouts of oxidative stress, metabolite flux, and dynamic biochemical signaling. We define Photonomics as an omics layer centered on the detection and computational analysis of ultra-weak photon emissions (UPEs), which originate from oxidative metabolism and radical pair recombination in biological tissues. These emissions provide non-invasive biomarkers of redox state and metabolic activity, offering continuous optical access to stress and signaling responses across symbiotic systems. This sensing data is processed via hybrid classical–quantum machine learning pipelines. We employ quantum principal component analysis (qPCA) and quantum walk–based models to extract causal structure and temporal dependencies from high-dimensional datasets. These methods enable predictive modeling of nonlinear biological dynamics in microbial and plant systems. Our long-term goal is to integrate biosensing with MEMS-based actuation for closed-loop control of nutrient delivery and microbial consortia—advancing toward adaptive, programmable ecological interventions.
