My mom's ancestors, the Jamaican Maroons, invented ‘jerk’ as a cooking method in the hills of Accompong, Jamaica where my family continues to live for over 200 years. I learned about farming and developed my cooking skills while spending summers with my paternal grandparents at their farm where we were hands on from an early age tending crops, slaughtering poultry, assisting with cleaning animal intestines for party meals, or standing on a crate to assist 'mama' at the open fire side. My cousins and I had a farming competition to see whose crop would bear fruit by the end of the summer each year. Oh, life was so good and so simple. Food & Folklore is a project that pays homage to indigenous food, farm traditions, and food producers - primarily those from the non-european diasporas. We honor the food-ways of natives, elders, immigrants, farmers, fisherfolk, local produce and the unspoken keepers of food traditions from across the globe right here in the metropolitan city of Boston.
