The German NGO Forum on Environment & Development is an open network for non-governmental organizations working on all aspects of sustainable development. These are primarily environmental and development organizations, but not exclusively. From the outset, organizations working on agriculture and food, water policy, etc. have also been members. In terms of content, the work of the Forum - i.e. its working groups, but also of individual third-party funded projects - concentrates primarily on international policy processes that emerged from the Rio Conference of 1992. In these processes, the Forum coordinates (in the form of formal and less formal working groups) contributions from German civil society (naturally without any claim to exclusivity), conversely disseminates information to German civil society, actively participates in international civil society coordination and negotiation processes, maintains contacts with partners worldwide and organizes and facilitates contacts with key players in German (and European) politics. In addition, the Forum cooperates with other civil society actors and umbrella organizations on various topics and regularly coordinates processes relevant to civil society together with them.
The work of the Forum is determined by its members and the steering committee elected by them, which is made up of representatives from environmental and development organizations. The Steering Committee bears political responsibility for the management of the Forum. The office is the mouthpiece and coordination instrument of the Forum and the hub for jointly developed positions. The project office is financially supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection of Germany. The legal guardian ("Rechtsträger") is the Deutscher Naturschutzring e.V. (DNR).
