FOUNTAIN EU Project

FOUNTAIN proposes a remediation solution for the reduction of groundwater and aquifer PFAS (PFOS, PFOA, GenX, PFBS, etc.) pollution by utilizing an innovative technology based on functionalized magnetic nanoparticles that will allow the use of treated groundwater in the surface finishing industry and the downstream treatment of wastewater, restoring aquifer resources and reducing water consumption. FOUNTAIN solution consists of the following three pillars: i) novel sampling and analytical methodologies for PFAS monitoring; ii) remediation approach based on functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and advanced electrochemical oxidation iii) treatment of wastewater deriving from the surface finishing industry for PFAS removal and utilization of treated groundwater for the needs of the surface finishing industry. Their integrated use will increase understanding of PFAS effects on the environment by improving analytical methods, screening and testing protocols/strategies, and sustainable treatment technologies. This FOUNTAIN conceptual scheme is designed with the objective of obtaining specific solutions, technically and economically viable, socially acceptable, environmentally positive, and business opportunities, to push partners, as well as the industrial growing sectors, to a better competitive situation. The primary output of the FOUNTAIN project is the demonstration in relevant environment of an innovative, environmentally sustainable and cost-effective remediation solution for the removal of PFAS from groundwater and wastewater. The consortium is specifically designed to enable rapid uptake through the combination of industrial partners with the capacity to develop the required technologies and roll out the remediation solution across their locations, together with academic and association beneficiaries who will be able to respond quickly to the distinct and diverse requirements of the end-users.
