Since 2008, Dr Julian Raxworthy has been practising landscape architecture professionally as FREE-RANGE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS (FRLA). The name reflects his spatial and conceptual mobility, with a touch of pop culture and an emphasis on site. Part side-hustle, part calling, FRLA collaborates widely with gardeners and architects, mostly in Australia and South Africa, driven by curiosity and shared interests. Restless, FRLA explores different design processes, hybridising the analog and the digital in often uncomfortable ways. FRLA also experiments with different ways of practising, crossing boundaries between garden and landscape design, installation, and horticulture. With the addition of a qualification in planning, FRLA oscillates between the scale of ecology and the scale of experience, viewing landscape as simultaneously culture and nature.
