FULL QUALIFICATION IN FRANCE OF LARGE-SCALE HYDROGEN UNDERGROUND STORAGE AND REPLICATION FROM GERMANY TO ALL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES The FRHYGE project has been officially launched by the European Consortium on March 20th. With a budget of 43 million euros, of which 20 million are funded by the European Union's Clean Hydrogen Partnership, this project is led by 17 p artners and coordinated by Storengy, enhancing new perspectives for the development of renewable hydrogen storage in Europe. Born from the merger of the GeoH2 initiatives in Manosque, France, and SaltHy in Harsefeld, Germany, FrHyGe aims to validate underground storage in salt caverns on an industrial scale. Specifically, in the first stage, the project plans to convert two salt cavities at the Manosque site, originally used for natural gas storage, into installations capable of storing 3000 tons of pure hydrogen each. Therefore, a demonstrator will be implemented at the underground storage site in Manosque to assess the viability of the technology and its replicability at the SaltHy site in Harsefeld, within a cavern capable of storing up to 6000 tons of pure hydrogen. Subsequently, this technology will be deployed on a European scale. The 17 partners will collaborate to realize technical, economic, regulatory, safety, and environmental studies over a period of five years. The ultimate goal is to create a real hydrogen storage and transportation infrastructures where salt caverns could be connected to a larger corridor throughout Europe.
