First Women Bank Ltd. has been operating in Pakistan for over quarter of a century, with the first branch opening in Karachi in 1989. It is the first unique financial institution and public sector bank of its kind in the world for women and their families. Today, we provide all banking facilities to women and their families irrespective of gender across the country with 42 Branches in 24 cities. First Women Bank Ltd. was created through an affirmative action of the parliament in 1989 to register Government’s Commitment to provide access to half of its population to the formal financial services. Pakistan earned the status of being a pioneer in world for setting up this unique institution. It is pertinent to mention here that the model of FWBL has been replicated by Tanzania and India in 2009 and 2013 respectively First Women Bank is distinctively different in terms of its charter which directs it to conduct business of a banking company in a manner designed to meet the special needs of women, encourage and assist them in promotion, running of trade and industry and practice of profession. Currently none of the scheduled banks are committed to focus on meeting special needs of women in a manner mandated to FWBL.
