The Gulf 7 Pediatric Disaster Network (G7), is a federally funded Center of Excellence dedicated to improving pediatric disaster preparedness and response throughout the U.S. Gulf Coast (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico). The G7 network includes Texas Children's Hospital as the main site, along with Children's Hospital of New Orleans, Children's of Mississippi, Children's of Alabama, Emory, University of Miami, and University of Puerto Rico.
Despite children comprising around 25-30% of injured patients in disasters and 50% of people impacted by disasters overall, pediatric disaster planning is often overlooked by healthcare systems. Children in G7’s region are particularly vulnerable, as the U.S. Gulf Coast states/territories have historically been hit by some of the nation’s worst disasters, such as hurricanes, massive floods, state-wide power grid failures, and pandemics.
G7 is responding to the dire need for pediatric readiness in our region and beyond by assembling a team of experts across the continuum of pediatric care with extensive hands-on experience preparing and responding to disasters. G7 aims to harness and develop best practices in pediatric disaster preparedness and response, and to share these practices at the local, state, and regional levels through a wide variety of ongoing initiatives. Projects related to Educational Disaster Courses, Disaster Drills/Simulations, Pediatric Preparedness Planning, building capacity for Deployable Medical Assistance Teams with pediatric patients, and Disaster Telehealth are just a few of the many ongoing initiatives being conducted by the G7 Network.
