Gallery Weekend Tel Aviv

In September 2018, Gallery Weekend Tel Aviv will launch its inaugural edition. Conceived as an annual three-day event, GWTA is dedicated to showcasing the city’s contemporary art scene, as well as bringing together art professionals, collectors, and art lovers to engage with the artistic production taking place in this singular creative hub. During the activity-packed weekend, visitors will be able to visit a variety of exhibitions and special events in galleries, museums, nonprofit and artist-run institutes, as well as artists’ studios. The goal: to provide insight into the most exciting movements in the Israeli art scene today. The program will also include professional gatherings, talks, workshops, performances, and screenings. Over the last decade, Tel Aviv has gained international recognition as a city brimming with cultural and artistic production. Younger generations of Israeli artists are now regularly shown in galleries, institutions, and biennials around the world. A unique sensibility emerges from inhabiting a position on the art world’s periphery, while largely defining itself in relation to the cultural centers of the West. Unsurprisingly, the country’s geopolitical insularity and uneasy political circumstances, often inform art production in Israel; many artists probe their own multi-faceted identity and stance vis-a-vis a contested political reality. Gallery Weekend Tel Aviv wants international visitors to encounter, first hand, the contexts from which this unique source of artistic production emerges.
