Software Architectures for Robotics (SofAR) introduces recent advances and state-of-the-art approaches to software development for robots. The course covers (but it is not limited to): novel trends in robot software design, component-based software frameworks, communication and information flow in robot software architectures, management of heterogeneous hardware and software components, bio-inspired design of robot architectures, integration of perception modules, knowledge representation formalisms, hybrid reactive/deliberative reasoning modules, action approaches. During the course, a number of real-world examples are given, and students can deepen their knowledge through a series of practice classes in lab environments. The course features also a number of invited seminars. The course assume good knowledge of C/C++, and introductory knowledge to the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, which is taught in the first part of the twin Advanced and Robot Programming course.
