Guizhou Berkeley Big Data Innovation Research Center

The Guizhou Berkeley Big Data Innovation Research Center (GBIC) has been established as a premier, global hub for conducting data analytic research to improve the health and well-being of China’s population. Based in Guizhou Province, China, the purpose of the GBIC is to address societal issues on a regional level and to further advance solutions that will benefit China overall. Under the direction of the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare and in partnership with the University of California Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), the GBIC will conduct advanced data analytics to address solutions for the 21st century, focusing on cutting-edge research methods that lead to rapid translation into social welfare policy and practice. GBIC’s efforts in 2016-17 focus on conducting an assessment of regional data resources, developing a research infrastructure and conducting two pilot studies to improve the well-being of vulnerable older adults and school-age children, respectively. The long-term research agenda of GBIC will focus on the development of actionable programmatic and policy recommendations for consideration by government agencies to address areas identified by the research teams that can lead to improved quality of life and care of vulnerable populations.
