GECONABI_RD Congo

GECONABI (Geomatics for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity) is a Congolese nonprofit organization based in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Our mission is to protect the environment, preserve biodiversity, and promote the sustainable management of natural resources. A group of young graduates founded the organization to apply the skills they acquired during their studies and contribute to the development of their community. Kwakanaba Mweze Adolphe, an environmental and land resource management engineer who specializes in geographic information systems, initiated the project. Our ambition is to build a Congolese society that combines nature and technology to promote sustainable development while respecting the environment and biodiversity. To achieve this, we must transform current growth models by integrating technological innovations that promote the sustainable management of natural resources. Specifically, we aim to promote green technologies that align with local realities, such as climate-smart agriculture, renewable energies (solar and hydraulic), remote sensing systems for monitoring ecosystems, and digital tools for participatory and inclusive environmental governance. Our vision also aims to reduce poverty, improve the well- being of local populations — particularly in Bukavu — and provide job opportunities for ambitious young people. This will enable them to contribute to sustainable development through meaningful and innovative projects. Realizing this vision requires close collaboration among local communities, researchers, public authorities, and the private sector to design eco-responsible solutions that limit pressure on forests, soils, and biodiversity while stimulating the local economy. Although is still in an informal framework, it is based on a clear vision: to use geomatics tools to support nature conservation, biodiversity preservation, and the promotion of local knowledge in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
