Gender Focus

One of the world’s biggest challenges is the marginalisation of women and girls. Here at the International Development Unit of the University of Portsmouth, we conduct research into areas such as gender-based violence, and cultural practices that harm women and girls. Partnered with on-the-ground researchers and NGOs in the global South, we explore issues like violence against women in Africa and South Asia. We have researched harmful practices such as child marriage, breast ironing and female genital mutilation in places like India, South Sudan and Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal. And we have researched the links between women, work and violence in Pakistan, Nepal and Myanmar. Our new online platform, called Gender Focus, shares insights to help other researchers and funders. We feature papers, videos, and podcasts produced by our partner organisations. For instance, we showcase our work with Displacement Narrators. These are citizens who report on-the-ground experiences from within their communities when standard data collection may not be possible.
