The material was invented for use as wood paneling on the sides of American station wagon vehicles in 1955 but has taken off in recent years, especially in Japan where they have strict building material controls due to natural disasters. They now build many internal structures using MDF but then wrap it with an architectural film to replicate concrete, marble, wood, etc.
