The original GeoCities, owned by Yahoo, was a beloved platform for creating personal websites that was shut down in 2009, by Yahoo, over the objections of 10’s of millions of users resulting in Yahoo deleting 100M+ user created websites from the internet. In 2020, the USPTO cancelled Yahoo’s GeoCities trademark, and in 2022, we successfully registered the GeoCities trademark. Leveraging the GeoCities trademark, we worked with legal teams at the largest tech companies to secure GeoCities branded usernames across the web, including GitHub, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, Twitch, Kick, LinkedIn, Linktree, and many others, strengthening the our GeoCities IP and brand. The new GeoCities is a decentralized website builder and search engine ensuring your GeoCities websites are permanent and censorship resistant, built on: • ENS: You own your website name as an ENS domain, a decentralized naming system on Ethereum. • IPFS: Your website is hosted on IPFS, a peer-to-peer network that can’t be censored or taken down. • EFP: Follow other GeoCities websites using a decentralized social graph, creating a network of discoverable sites.
