The Geotechnical engineering group at IIT Madras was established in the early 1960s. Since then, the group has been offering various post-graduation programs and carrying out advanced research & consultancy projects in different areas of Geotechnical Engineering. The group is among the largest in the country, with eleven faculties working in different areas covering almost all important Geotechnical engineering areas. Major research areas include physicochemical-mechanical behaviour of soil, soil dynamics & earthquake engineering and geophysical investigation, geotechnical uncertainty and hazards, soil stabilization, geosynthetics, environmental geotechnics, unsaturated soil mechanics, geomechanics and micromechanics, rock mechanics, numerical methods, and computational geomechanics. The division has excellent laboratory facilities and is one of the best in the country. All graduates are well-placed in industry/academia (including IITs, NITs, foreign universities, CSIR laboratories, and major national and multinational companies).
