GEOTHERMICA Initiative is a European initiative that brings together public-sector representatives to align national efforts, accelerate the deployment of geothermal energy, and ensure it becomes a key pillar in the global energy transition.
Through coordinated research and innovation programs, GEOTHERMICA fosters cross-border collaboration, mutual learning, and impactful activities that strengthen the geothermal sector beyond what countries can achieve individually.
Its mission is to promote research and innovation in geothermal energy, making it reliable, safe, and cost-competitive. The Initiative unites the financial resources and expertise of programme owners and managers from 16 countries and regions, working together with support from the European Commission.
Since its launch, GEOTHERMICA has:
- Mobilised nearly €90 million in public and private investment,
- Launched two joint calls resulting in 16 projects across Europe, the United States, and Norway,
- Supported the demonstration and validation of breakthrough geothermal concepts with the potential for large-scale commercial deployment.
The GEOTHERMICA Office is jointly managed by GEORG – Geothermal Research Cluster and the Environment and Energy Agency of Iceland.
