About German UN Youth Delegates - Jugenddelegierte zur UN-Generalversammlung
Young people must be the focus of the United Nations! The contribution of young people to achieving the United Nations' core goals — peace, human rights, and sustainable development — is often underestimated. Their involvement in political processes remains insufficient, yet genuine youth participation enhances the UN's work, making it more effective and future-oriented. Youth delegates to the UN General Assembly play a key role in fostering youth participation internationally. They bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and energy to political discussions, contributing to better, more legitimate policies. As experts on issues directly affecting them, young people are deeply invested in sustainable solutions. To prepare for our role at the UN, we engage with young people in Germany throughout the year. Through workshops and dialogues with youth organisations, we inform them about the UN and discuss global challenges. These interactions highlight young people's commitment and provide us with ideas and recommendations to present at the UN. Each year, as part of the German delegation, we attend the UN General Assembly in New York. Our activities include advising diplomats, working on resolutions, collaborating with other youth delegates, and delivering a speech to the Third Committee, which addresses social, humanitarian, and cultural issues. Additionally, we represent youth perspectives at the Social Development Commission and other UN events. During Germany’s Security Council membership, we contributed to processes like the ‘Youth, Peace, Security’ resolution. Across discussions, we advocate for young people’s concerns, particularly during the biennial youth resolution and in resolutions on topics like human trafficking and employment. Since 2005, Germany has elected two youth delegates to the UN General Assembly annually.
