About Biomedical Engineering Group - University of Valladolid

The Biomedical Engineering Group of the University of Valladolid (GIB-UVa) is a multidisciplinary research team established in 2004 within the University of Valladolid. The group is part of the Centro de Investigación Biomédica (CIBER) in the subject area of Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN, CB19/01/00012). It is also recognised as a Consolidated Research Unit (UIC-060) by the Junta de Castilla y León and as a Recognised Research Group (GIR) by the UVa. The GIB-UVa is composed of a diverse team of engineers and physicians with expertise in pneumology, neurology, neurophysiology, psychiatry, and ophthalmology. These specialists work closely across four main lines of research, focusing particularly on the use of advanced medical signal and image processing techniques and artificial intelligence to develop predictive models for disease detection, prognosis, and personalised diagnosis. Current Research Lines: - Brain Activity Characterisation: Developing tools to support the diagnosis and understanding of diseases affecting the central nervous system, such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia or migraine. - Automated Cardiorespiratory Signal Analysis: Creating systems to automatically detect sleep apnoea and manage chronic respiratory conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. - Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Systems: Designing and developing systems for real-time brain wave analysis, enabling communication and control with applications in assistive technology, cognitive training, and neurorehabilitation. - Ocular Fundus Image Processing: Leveraging advanced image processing techniques for the early diagnosis and characterisation of ophthalmological conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The GIB-UVa exemplifies the synergy between engineering and medicine, driving innovation through cutting-edge research to improve healthcare outcomes.
