Until the mid-1800s, wood was the source of nearly all of the nations’ energy needs for heating, cooking and lighting. From the late 1800s until today, fossil fuels — coal, petroleum and natural gas — have been the major sources of energy. However, between 1992–2017 the growth of power production from solar sources (PV) has been an exponential curve, evolving from a niche market of small-scale applications to a mainstream electricity source. It is for such a reason that in 2018, GIL has decided to enter the PV market through the acquisition of TerniEnergia, an established international brand headquartered in Italy, leader in the design, procurement, construction, commissioning, O&M of solar photovoltaic plants of utility scale, with a rich pedigree of projects successfully completed in Europe, Africa and LATAM. Today GIL’s business focus is on solar power generation and the group’s aim is to become one of the main solar PV EPC contractors in southern Europe by offering extensive expertise in solar PV EPC, building solutions, Operations and Maintenance and other innovative offerings. However, GIL will also continue developing the other activities with particular regard to the EP of ductile iron pipeline systems for water and sewage applications that remains one of the group’s core activities.
