Geographic Information Systems today are playing a pivotal role in a multitude of areas, from transportation, telecom and government projects to crime mapping and waste management. With the ability to integrate software, hardware as well as large volumes of data, GIS provides an efficient means for the capture, analysis, management and display of all forms of information that needs to be geographically referenced. On account of these capabilities, the reach of GIS has grown exponentially over the past decade with the technology being applied in every field of human endeavor. Be it in helping businesses identify new customers or making natural disaster response more effective, GIS is being widely accepted as an essential computing infrastructure across organizations. However, even with a large number of corporate and government organizations taking to this technology and investing in its infrastructure, GIS adoption is still being hindered by a number of challenges such as cost constraints, increased time consumption, need for high-end hardware & enormous data inputs and the lack of GIS awareness.
