Global Project Against Hate and Extremism Overview

Over the last several years, far-right movements motivated by white supremacy, xenophobia, anti-LGBTQI beliefs, antisemitism, religious discrimination, and gender bias have been growing in North America, Europe and globally. Using research, advocacy, and education, the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism aims to counter the rising tide of extremism across borders by: Documenting and exposing how extremist and hateful movements use social media and the internet to organize, propagandize, and recruit followers and sympathizers; Educating anti-hate actors, policymakers, and the public about extremist movements, their leadership, and their activities; Examining how extremist movements influence each other across borders, and specifically analyzing the impact of American extremists on other countries. By shining light on these racist and hateful activities, and through coordinated campaigns executed by a transnational network, we’ll work toward a global reduction in extremist activities and an associated reduction in mainstream acceptance of bigoted ideologies. GPAHE was co-founded by Heidi Beirich, Ph.D. and Wendy Via. Beirich is a global expert on American and European extremist movements, including the white supremacist, anti-immigrant, antisemitic and antigovernment movements, and is the author of numerous academic publications on hate and extremism movements. Prior to co-founding GPAHE, Beirich led the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project, the foremost organization tracking hate and extremism movements in the United States. Via has an extensive background in influencing national narratives and actions around civil and human rights issues, including the exposition of racism and extremism in institutional systems, advocacy campaigns, storytelling, research, and impact philanthropy. Prior to co-founding GPAHE, Via held an executive leadership role at the Southern Poverty Law Center and worked with organizations committed to women’s rights.
