GlobeMed is a grassroots student organization that aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of the impoverished around the world.
GlobeMed at the University of Michigan currently partners with the Amún Shéa school in Morazán, El Salvador funded by the Perkin Educational Opportunities Foundation (PEOF) non-profit organization and the Joy Southfield Health and Education Center which is a community-based organization in Detroit, Michigan.
We are partnering with Amún Shéa, a unique school in Morazán, an area impacted severely by the Salvadorian civil war and currently demonstrating the highest poverty levels in the country. PEOF was founded in 2007 with a multi-pronged mission geared towards the development of a brighter future in Morazán. They aim to 1) change attitude, 2) develop capacities, and 3) create opportunity. Amún Shéa is their main project - it is a school with a dynamic Problem-Based Learning (PBL) style developed to confront the root causes of poverty. The school promotes the development of community leaders by investigating real issues within the community. Students learn from finding solutions and engaging their community in implementing them. They believe that "Those that give, receive" are are committed to community development, health, and investment.
We are also partnering with the Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation in Detroit, Michigan to facilitate healthy eating and cooking classes for local elementary school students. In these after-school session, the children learn ways to cook healthy meals, eat healthy, and generally live healthy lives. Detroit is often called a "food desert" due to the few sources of fresh, healthy food, and these classes are aimed at providing kids with the knowledge necessary to identify and utilize healthy foods.
