The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the longest running annual student engineering competition in Canada. Approximately 500 engineering students from 19 universities across Canada and the United States competed in the 44th Annual GNCTR in January, 2018 in Waterloo, Ontario.
Student teams must conceptualize, design, fabricate, and then race a toboggan with a running surface made of only concrete down a ski hill. The toboggans must hold five riders, and have a protective roll frame, steering, and braking systems. Teams are judged based upon a written technical report detailing their design, technical presentations and exhibit at the competition, and their overall race day results.
As there is no overarching body overseeing GNCTR, it is an entirely alumni and student run competition. The organizing committee is made up of 8-10 alumni passionate about continuing extra curricular opportunities for engineering students like GNCTR. Organizing the competition involves two years of planning the logistics and technical aspects of the competition including venues, transportation, accommodations, official rules, the race hill, etc., along with raising corporate sponsorship to meet the $160,000 budget.
GNCTR is a fantastic opportunity for engineering students to develop technical design knowledge along with soft skills like leadership and team communication.
