My core purpose is to help entrepreneurs, leadership teams, and businesses achieve their dreams while enjoying the journey. I love to see clients implement Scaling Up systems and watch them thrive. I’ve also been in your shoes. After earning my degree in mechanical engineering, I went into the field of high-performance plastics. I started my first business in 1998. It was HP Plastics, a high-performance plastics manufacturing business. HP Plastics made products for the semiconductor, medical device, and aerospace/defense industries. HP Plastics was acquired by CoorsTek in 2001. I then founded Spinal Elements, Inc. Spinal Elements manufactures premium spinal implants and instruments for spine surgery. Spinal Elements was recently awarded Best Place to Work in San Diego, revolutionized interbody implant materials, and built its brand through charity. The more we gave to charity, the more profit we made. Our BHAG was to be the largest contributor to Make-a-Wish. Spinal Elements was acquired by Kohlberg in 2017. While I was the CEO of Spinal Elements, we found ourselves stuck. For a few years, we weren’t growing. As we failed to achieve our goals, the journal became much less fun. I then hired a Scaling Up coach. We implemented the Scaling Up system with the help of our coach, and then began to flourish. After a decade and being stagnant for a few years, thanks to Scaling Up systems and my coach, we began growing. First 10%, then 25% and more. Finally, we were lighting our industry on fire, and having a blast. A friend once told me that the time to sell is when people are tapping you on the shoulder. We were acquired in a great transaction in 2017. My former management team now runs the organization, and they have continued to thrive. My goal is to help my clients achieve all that I have only bigger and faster.
