Despite technological advances in the food safety industry, food borne outbreaks continue to occur, an ever present reminder that current practices are not sufficiently protecting the public. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year, food borne diseases cause illness in 1 in 6 Americans resulting in 128,000 hospitalizations, 3,000 deaths and more than $100 Billion in economic loss. A significant portion of recent outbreaks arise from the consumption of contaminated raw produce. In response to these growing concerns, The Food Safety and Modernization Act was signed into law in 2011, and the Produce Safety Rules are now under discussion at the FDA.
Goddard Labs is poised to participate in this new paradigm, as the developer of HARVEST - an easy-to-use, hand-held, sample preparation technology, to enable producers and distributors to transition to faster and improved testing practices.
