The details... Evangelism is a two pronged message. It is about preaching the message of faith and it is about preaching the message of repentance. The message of faith is directed towards unbelievers—“Change your mind—Jesus Christ died as a substitute for sinners and rose from the dead on the third day.” The message of repentance is directed towards believers (Christians)—“Change your mind and turn away from sin.” I am not saying or implying that all mood struggles have their origins in unbelief and sin. What I am saying is that no matter the cause for mood struggles we will preach the message of faith and repentance. Secondarily, we provide ministerial services. Serving is about bringing the food, getting the water, and picking up the garbage—or its equivalent. My service includes: having meals and praying for ministry clients, writing emails, letters and books, and making hospital visits. I also serve (three years now) as a volunteer in various capacities at “Hope for the Heart.” Keep in mind that the goal shouldn’t simply be healing. Though for some God may heal. Rather, the goal is holiness—to be transformed into the likeness of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. My life’s journey in pursuit of a good mood has convinced me that anyone can live a life that honors God, His Word and His ways—no matter what challenges or illness comes their way. Through my story and ministry, I am seeking to lead people to the God of the Bible—the only True Source of hope! Thankfully, removing the stigma associated with mental illness is gaining traction in the church. Christians are opening their minds to the reality that mental illnesses are a biologically based illness. The BEST way to remove this stigma is to preach God’s Word. 1) God loves people with mood struggles. That’s why He took the time to record the stories of many people in the Bible who had serious mood struggles. For example: Job had mood struggles related to significant losses. Elijah had mood struggles were related to success. King David had mood struggles related to adultery and murder. Jonah had mood struggles related to disobedience. Moses had mood struggles related to negative influences. These people (and others) did, too; Abimelech, Ahithophel, King Saul, Zimri and Judas. 2) God’s Son, The Lord Jesus Christ had mood struggles, too. Jesus had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected, a man of suffering, familiar with pain, held in low esteem, oppressed, and afflicted. He was betrayed by one of his closest friends, abused and mocked and tortured. On the cross Jesus cries out “My God, My God why have you forsaken me?” Because Jesus knows exactly how we feel we can call on Him and receive grace and mercy in our time of need. 3) God’s Word has much to say about the word “spirit” which most Christians don’t know is really translated “mood.” I.E. “He has a sad spirit” means “He has a sad mood.” God’s Word also has lots to say about the topic of the mind.
