The single most important thing you can do is find what's called "product-market fit".
Basically that means you work vigorously to clearly define three things:
1. Who your customers are as a group, using as much descriptive detail as possible. If you create a fictional composite of the people in this group it's called your "customer avatar".
2. The specific, real, urgent problem your customers have and are actively trying to solve.
3. How your app is clearly the best option to fix that problem.
The basic concept here is to apply the scientific method to prove the hypothesis of your app idea. This is the premise of the "Lean Startup" movement.

There are many techniques for testing the market with your idea, but the bottom line is you need to contact people from your customer group (number 1 above) and talk to them about their problem (number 2 above). If you have defined #1 and #2 accurately your customers will guide you to #3.
Unfortunately 99 out of 100 would-be founders have failed at one or more of the three critical steps above. That makes the entire discussion a non-starter. In that case, the business is doomed no matter how great we make the software.
If you want investor funding you will have to show traction. That means you've found product-market fit and have users preordering your software -- demanding your hurry up and deliver your MVP.
