About Great Sea Interconnector
The Great Sea Interconnector project, implemented by the Independent Power Transmission System Operator of Greece (IPTO), will connect for the first time the electricity networks of Cyprus and Israel to the European grid, via Greece. The landmark energy project will provide Cyprus and Israel with a "green", reliable and bidirectional underwater cable connection, which will enable better utilization of renewable energy generated in all interconnected countries, leading to a significant reduction of CO2 emissions. In addition, the Great Sea Interconnector will serve as a new alternative energy supply source for the European Union and bolster Greece's strategic goal to become a key exporter of clean energy. With a transmission capacity of 1,000 MW, the project will feature an underwater cable stretching 1,208 km, reaching depths of up to 3,000 meters, making it one of the longest and deepest interconnectors in the world.
