GreekSchools

Everything we know about Greek philosophical schools comes from the Lives of Diogenes Laërtius and the Arrangement of the Philosophers by Philodemus of Gadara, preserved only by the Herculaneum papyri. However, these papyri are in a critical conservative state and the currently available editions of them have largely been made obsolete. The EU-funded GreekSchools project will use the latest technologies to enhance the reading capability and produce new modern critical editions. The project will test advanced techniques such as shortwave infrared hyperspectral imaging, terahertz imaging, optical coherence tomography, X-ray fluorescence mapping, 3D microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry. This will enhance the comprehension of the text and will enable the reading of hidden texts on the verso and concealed inside overlapping layers. The result will be inserted in a collaborative open-access digital edition.
