LITERATURE INSPIRED Literature will be introduced using flannel stories, finger plays, and puppetry. “Story Book Theater” is our way of providing children another perspective of a traditional or classic fairy tale, and an opportunity to bring it to life. When children have become familiar with a book in English, we reintroduce it in Spanish, if available. We live in a very diverse community and it is not uncommon to have several languages spoken in the classroom. Language acquisition occurs much faster in early childhood than it does in later years. Within just a few months the comprehension and ability to articulate effectively in English is astounding for children who arrive to us barely able to communicate their needs. It is the children's interests and choice of books that inspire our creative curriculum. "CHILD DIRECTED" simply means we follow the interests of the children. The choose the books they would like to see brought to life, the may choose how the Letter's are introduced by the different books available in the "Reading Corner or Library Center". "Teacher Facilitated" means that we enhance our classroom environment to engage the interests of the children and promote exploration and help recreate the magic of our own childhoods so that we may share the love of learning and discovery. "PROJECT BASED LEARNING" As John Dewey would say, "Give them something to do!!!" INTRODUCED THROUGH "STEAM" Having a classroom set up in learning centers is the most effective way to differentiate and introduce new concepts. Children exploring concepts in the dramatic play area that were incorporated into the other learning centers validates their choices and interests. Emergent curriculum is embraced and allows for child directed study. When a fascination develops or “emerges” towards a new subject we encourage further discussion and investigation. Every moment is a “Teachable Moment” as we teach children about life, they teach us what life is about.
