Over the last few decades, we witnessed a great increase in temperature and a changing pattern of
rainfall. We also see local farmers having more difficulty making a living from the competing leading
world market prices. More people are looking for a meaningful life. Can we live towards a change?
With the knowledge of today Ghana can be fully sustainable in about 50 years. With clean soil,
clean water, clean air, no use of fossil fuels, good social relationships and a rich plant and animal
life. And with intelligent solutions that provide in favourable conditions for people, for economy and
for biodiversity. This is possible and also necessary so is our position.
New technologies offer solutions to transform towards production with a minimum of negative impact
to the environment. Agro-forestry however goes beyond this concept. Agro-forestry offers solutions to
transform towards production with a maximum of positive impact to the environment: It is producing
food, fibres, medicines and energy while restoring environments at the same time.
This proposal introduces a new innovative methodology of farming. A methodology that turns
current dis-accumulative situations (declining processes such as desertification) into accumulative
situations: landscapes becoming richer in vegetation, building topsoil, gaining biodiversity, raising
groundwater tables and becoming more productive while reversing climate change.
These methodologies are gaining notoriety as ‘Syntropic farming’. Syntropic farming due to the
low-tech performance, is a very appropriate methodology for farmers in sub-Sahara Africa. By
adopting this methodology, farmers don’t just become more climate resilient, but they can even
positively impact their environment. It is mainly inspired by the work of Ernst Götsch who has
tremendous success with syntropic farming in Brasil and his system is now widely copied by both
small- as well as large commercial farms in South America and beyond.
