Green Hurghada

Green Hurghada is a collaborative initiative implemented by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). We aim to reduce the environmental impact of tourism and conserve the region's rich biodiversity by integrating climate-smart technologies and promoting responsible practices. Our Objectives: - Promote climate-smart infrastructure and practices in tourism, energy, and transport. - Integrate biodiversity conservation into tourism development and operations. - Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our Key Focus Areas: - Renewable Energy - Energy Efficiency - E-mobility - Nature-Based Solutions - Climate-Smart Technologies Project Components: - Strategic Policy Development: Develop a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to guide sustainable tourism development and strengthen institutional capacity for applying Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) in tourism and related sectors. - Green Technology Investments: Develop a climate-smart capital investment plan with a pipeline of green investments and develop a financial mechanism to incentivize the tourism sector to invest in climate-smart technologies and nature-based solutions. - Long-Term Sustainability: Enhance stakeholder capacities, awareness, and partnerships to promote sustainable tourism practices and improve protected area management, community participation, and benefit-sharing from conservation and biodiversity-friendly tourism. - Monitoring and Evaluation: Establish monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track project implementation and impact and conduct a mid-term review and terminal evaluation to assess progress and outcomes.
