The green and digital transformation is reshaping industries across Europe, with energy-intensive industries (EIIs) at the forefront of this shift. GreenStep is a pioneering initiative designed to enhance innovation, strengthen regional ecosystems, and foster interregional collaboration for a sustainable and competitive future.
What is GreenStep?
GreenStep is an EU-funded project under the Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) programme. It brings together 8 regions from 6 different countries, uniting clusters, universities, companies, and public institutions in a Q-Helix approach. The project aims to optimise technology and processes in EIIs, ensuring greener, more efficient, and more interconnected industrial value chains.
Why is GreenStep important?
GreenStep tackles key sustainability and innovation challenges in EIIs by:
✔ Enhancing regional innovation ecosystems through interregional cooperation.
✔ Aligning Smart Specialization Strategies (S3) to drive investment in sustainable technologies.
✔ Fostering knowledge-sharing among businesses, researchers, policymakers, and investors.
✔ Developing new interregional investment projects.
GreenStep follows a structured five-step methodology, starting with benchmarking and ecosystem analysis, moving towards stakeholder engagement and cooperation, and culminating in investment and sustainability planning. This approach ensures practical, scalable, and high-impact solutions for EIIs across Europe.
