GunHil ltd. is founded by a seasoned producer and a creative person who have been collaborating for over 30 years in the creative industries. Hilmar Sigurdsson is the CEO and Producer of the company and Gunnar Karlsson is the creative force behind many of Iceland‘s most spectacular film ventures. After having spearheaded and built up Iceland’s first ever animation production company and studio as CEO and Creative Director, they parted at year end 2011 and formed their own production company with the aim of producing Animated Feature Film. This time, they put their own names to the new venture. Shortly after formation, Haukur Sigurjonsson joined the company to lead the opening of an office in Malmö, Sweden. Haukur has a vast new media and gaming production experience and is the key player in tying in GunHil’s properties with the vast opportunities that lie within all the new platforms. GunHil released its first Animated Feature Film in beginning of 2018 entitled ‘PLOEY – You Never Fly Alone’, which did well at box-office in diverse countries like France, Poland, Mexico and Turkey and ended up being sold for Theatrical release in over 70 countries by Playmaker (formerly ARRI Media International). Ploey has highest worldwide box-office attendance of any Icelandic film. GunHil was purchased by Sagafilm, Iceland’s leading and oldest production company in 2017 with Hilmar taking the role of CEO of the group. In July 2023, Gunnar and Hilmar bought back the company which still bears their own names.
