HACF main mission is to help patients with kidney (renal) problems in Sudan through HACF Kidney Center and other relevant avenues. Kidney problems are very common in Sudan and the overall kidney care is sub optimal for reasons including financial constraints and the health care system.
Currently, there are at least 6,000 patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis to survive. Worthy of mentioning is that there are no accurate statistics about these patients, and therefore the actual number would very likely far exceeds 6,000.
Unfortunately, there is at least a 2-month waiting time to find a dialysis chair in the capital Khartoum, with the waiting time much longer in other cities. It is highly possible that the patients will die during this waiting time from the many complications of renal failure. The number of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unknown, but is expected to be very high. Unfortunately, many patients with AKI who needs temporary renal replacement therapy (e.g. dialysis) to support their kidney functions until they recover from the acute injury, end permanently on dialysis due to sub optimal care and poor follow up, which are partially driven by financial constraints.
To practically help many of these patients, HACF is currently building a charity kidney center (HACF Kidney Center) in Sudan to be completed through 3 phases depending on availability of funds. Phase I will accommodate 30 dialysis chairs and can provide care to 275 ESRD patients. Phase II will accommodate 60-100 dialysis chairs and can provide care to 550-925 patients with AKI and ESRD. Phase III will be a specialized charity medical center for kidney diseases and transplantation. Of note is that HACF’s founder is a nephrologist (a kidney doctor) practicing in USA, and that HACF will work with other Sudanese nephrologists across the globe to accomplish its mission.
