Pertama kali didirikan pada tahun 1978 dengan nama Hartono Elektrik sebagai toko kecil yang menjual alat-alat listrik dan berlokasi di Jl. Kertajaya 75, Surabaya Indonesia.
Hartono Elektrik yang awalnya menjual peralatan listrik, kemudian berkembang menjadi salah satu pemain besar dalam bisnis elektronik di Jawa Timur.
Pada tahun 1999, manajemen baru Hartono Elektrik mengubah nama dari Hartono Elektrik menjadi Hartono Elektronika, dan kemudian pada tahun 2014 kata ‘Elektronika’ dihilangkan dari nama merek, menjadi Hartono.
