About HASC Telecoms Hub
This page is for anyone interested in the future of communications, telecoms technology and infrastructure. We post regular updates from our researchers and bring together experts from across academia, industry, and government. We exist because over the next decade, advancements in wireless technology are rapidly driving the need for integrated spectrum management. These advancements include the exploration of currently unused THz and optical spectrum, innovations in fibre systems like hollow-core fibres and new wavelength technologies. The wired and wireless spectrum can no longer be treated separately; they must be managed as a unified resource. Our research is making exciting new discoveries, covering three core areas: - All spectrum connectivity. The research team is exploring how to optimally combine wired and wireless internet technologies to achieve end-to-end connectivity. - Efficient, reliable and resilient networks. In densely populated regions, large numbers of internet users in the same geographical area can challenge the efficiency and reliability of communications networks. The research team is explore techniques to integrate different internet access technologies in a seamless and energy-efficient manner. - Trust & security. Future communication networks face key security threats, including the continual rise in cyber-attacks and the growing desire for ‘open connectivity’. The Hub is investigating a range of potential technologies to secure an integrated network, including Physical Layer Security, postquantum digital encryption, and quantum key distribution. By addressing these challenges, we can create future-ready networks that meet evolving user demands while ensuring the long-term viability of the UK’s digital infrastructure, security & resilience, sustainability, and economic growth, alongside improved societal & community outcomes, today and in the future.
