Duration: 24 months (01/01/2023 - 31/12/2024) Host Institution: National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Funding Authority: Hellenic Foundation for Research & Innovation (HFRI) -- The principal aim of the HEAT-ALARM project is to develop a prototype human-centric heat-health warning system (HWWS), going beyond the simple notion that outdoor meteorological conditions alone can reliably describe the heat-health nexus. Based on this goal, the specific objectives of HEAT-ALARM are: (i) To conduct an up-to-date (1999-2018) human-biometeorological and epidemiological study over Greece in order to link mortality to thermo-physiological heat stress, expressed by a sophisticated human-biometeorological index, the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET). (ii) To develop a prototype numerical weather prediction (NWP) system that will consider urban geomorphological factors, through a scheme that combines a building effect parameterization (BEP) and a building energy model (BEM), in order to account for the urban indoor temperatures and enhance the performance of the HHWS in terms of accurately predicting the intra-urban temperature variations. (iii) To define a science-based protocol, according to a combination of indicators and factors associated with the human heat stress and urban thermal environment, for issuing location-specific, impact- and user-oriented heat warnings. (iv) To engage with community, experts and stakeholders in order to increase awareness and preparedness, exchange knowledge and best practices, and demonstrate the developed HHWS.
