Back in 2014, we decided to deliver online courses in Egyptology and the Ancient World. To do that, we needed a platform that was: Flexible Different subjects benefit from being taught different ways. We wanted an all-singing, all-dancing platform that could deliver the widest possible variety of learning experiences, with functionality tailored to each course and to the specific needs (and technical challenges!) of ancient world subjects. Curated Quality matters. We wanted a platform where the academic quality and production values of each course were rigorously vetted and consistent, with course writers actively helped through the course production process. Focused Most online education platforms act like giant bookshops, offering materials on virtually every topic conceivable. We wanted our courses to sit within a defined ecosystem of modules all addressing related academic subjects. Communal Online education can be impersonal. We believe that education is more rewarding when it’s a journey shared with others. We wanted a platform that facilitated learner-to-learner engagement, without imposing cooperation on students who prefer self-directed activity. Commercial We don’t subscribe to the view that lecturers are poorly paid – everything’s relative, and academia is still one of the 40 highest earning professions (at least here in the UK). But there’s a catch. Pay scales are regimented, meaning many years of hard slog and insecurity before reaching the promised land of tenure. We wanted a platform that could make an appreciable improvement to the earnings of academics, particularly those in the early phases of their careers. The problem was, we couldn’t find a platform like that. So we built one.
