About Highland Materials, Inc.

Highland Materials is a producer of polysilicon which is a key element in the production of efficient solar cells to generate electricity. Our proprietary process results in 90% less carbon emissions and uses less power than traditional methods and proven since 2006 in 20 million solar cells currently powering homes and businesses. Our large 1.2 million square foot production facility to be built at Phipps Bend Industrial Park in Surgoinsville, TN will reach full production in 2027 and represents a $850 million investment. When fully operational, the company will offer more than 400 great-paying professional, technical, and operational jobs with excellent benefits. The company will also operate a Research & Development Facility in Johnson City, TN beginning in 2024. In addition to the production of aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy, the company will manufacture an aluminum alloy for casting purposes, such as molding engines for automobiles, and poly aluminum chloride, used for municipal and industrial water treatment facilities. The processes used pose no unique environmental or worker health and safety concerns. In 2024, Highland Materials was a recipient of a $255 million tax credit granted by the Federal government through the Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Tax Credit (48C), largely focused on clean energy manufacturing projects. According to the Solar Energy Manufacturers for America (SEMA) Coalition, the Highland Materials plant is the first new commercial polysilicon plant to be built in the US since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022. When fully operational, the new plant will produce enough polysilicon materials each year to provide electricity through solar cells to power 7,500,000 residential homes.
