When the Chairman of Middle East Chemicals (MEC), United Company of Pharmacists (UCP), and United Company for Trading & Distribution (UCTD) Dr Hossam Omar started his private business, pharmacists in Egypt were suffering. Each pharmaceutical company catered for the needs of pharmacies around the country from their own factories in Cairo and Alexandria and, consequently pharmaceutical outlets had to wait for over a month to take delivery of their orders. Moreover, they had to call in person at the state-owned pharmaceutical distribution center and wait in long queues for their turn to collect their needs. What put Dr. Hossam Omar ahead of his peers is his early on vision that made him realize that distribution was one of the pillars for a successful pharmaceutical industry. Paradoxically, it was a sector that nobody had paid attention to, and was the most problematic area in the industry. Dr. Omar was aware and had a far-sighted strategic plan in place.
