Back in 1820 the Congress decided to make Łódź a center for the textile industry and invited foreign investors and artisans to settle and grow the industry. By the end of the 19th century, Łódź had become the leading center for the production of cotton, wool, silk, jute, hemp, and leather and the manufacture of clothing, metals, chemicals, and paper. It resulted in rapid expansion of infrastructure, mills, and factories. The best proof of this is “Manufaktura,” once 69-hectare (170-acre) complex of mills and textile plant, now a fully restored shopping, restaurant and culture complex with a nearby Poznanski Palace, once own by a textile magnate J.
