HNI was co-founded by two brothers, David and Andrew McAfee, who sought ways of working at the intersection between International Development and Information and Communication Technology. In 2013, HNI supported more than 1,500 partners in over 110 countries to leverage Information and Communication Technology for Development. HNI has a world headquarters in Washington, D.C. and a regional office in Madagascar.
