Hunter Urban Policy & Planning (UPP) is a department within the School of Arts and Sciences at Hunter College. The department offers two graduate degrees: an accredited Master of Urban Planning degree and an accredited Master of Science in Urban Policy and Leadership. Both programs combine theory and practice to give students an in-depth understanding and appreciation of urban planning and policy. Our department also offers an undergraduate urban studies major that prepares students for higher education and careers in public service. Since its creation by advocacy planner Paul Davidoff in 1965, the department has consistently upheld a vision of urban planning and policy matters as multi-disciplinary fields. In keeping with this vision, the department’s faculty members represent a wide range of disciplines, including urban planning, architecture, political science, public policy, urban history, urban sociology, and public health. They collectively bring a wealth of academic and professional expertise to their teaching. The program also benefits from a distinguished part-time faculty bringing practical experience and knowledge in public and non-profit sectors into the classroom. Graduates from our programs go on to careers in the public, non-profit, and private sectors, with very high annual employment placement rates.
