Project “Hydro Pneumatic Energy Storage for Offshore Green Hydrogen Generation – HydroGenEration” (EWA 64/22) is investigating a concept for an offshore hybrid system consisting of offshore wind power as the primary electricity source, a Hydro-pneumatic Energy Storage System (HPES) system to stabilise the renewable electricity and an offshore H2 production plant. The specific focus is on the integrated systems' behaviour in Central Mediterranean climatic conditions, which are characterised by lower wind availability and higher variability.
Such a sustainable and novel system could offer a different solution to green and alternative fuel options requiring storage in diverse energy-reliant sectors; not least in the maritime sector. Green Hydrogen (H2) production is a cleaner and more sustainable way of producing a fuel whose end-product (at the combustion stage) is benign water. It is attracting ever-growing national and international attention due to its attributes as a versatile, long-term and high energy density fuel that can be used in the decarbonizing process of many fossil-fuel-based technologies.
Project HydroGenEration (EWA 64/22) is financed by The Energy and Water Agency, Malta, under Malta’s National Strategy for Research and Innovation in Energy and Water (2021-2030).
