The Institute for Chemical Neurosciences (iCNS) is a 10-year research program funded by a Gravitation grant from NWO, dedicated to uncovering the molecular mechanisms behind brain diseases and neuropsychiatric symptoms.
Mission
Psychiatric symptoms like low mood, anxiety, and psychosis occur across psychiatric and neurological syndromes, yet their biological causes remain unknown. Current treatments, including psychotherapy and medication, often lack efficacy and precision. iCNS focuses on molecular and cellular changes in neuronal connections to identify these mechanisms and improve diagnosis and treatment.
Innovative Approach
Unique Resources: Research uses human brain tissue and donor data from the Netherlands Brain Bank and Netherlands Neurogenetics Database.
Cutting-Edge Techniques: Advanced molecular analysis, AI, stem cells, and brain organoids reveal detailed insights into disease processes.
Collaborative Network: iCNS unites neurobiologists, chemists, psychiatrists, data scientists, and patient representatives in a multidisciplinary effort to drive breakthroughs.
