About Intelligent Biomimetic Design Lab (IBDL), Peking University

About Lab The Intelligent Biomimetic Design Lab (IBDL) was established in 2018 and was co-founded by Professors Xie Guangming, Sun Zhili, Cui Yue and Li Yongmei of College of Engineering (COE). Based on the design, development and practical applications of intelligent bionic equipment and systems, the lab explores the mechanism of individual organisms in nature, develops bionic innovations for individual functions of organisms, imitates the abilities of movement, perception, positioning, and communication of organisms, and highly integrates artificial intelligence, robotics and innovative design. In particular, the laboratory also explores the swarm behavior that exists widely in nature, simulates the ability of self-organized swarm collaboration and applies it to large-scale artificial swarms. The laboratory has three development directions: • Design and development of a new generation of intelligent bionic robots • Swarm intelligence technology • Applications of intelligent bionic technology in industry About PI Professor Xie Guangming is a professor of Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics in COE. He has presided over a number of National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and has won many awards including the 2nd prize of the National Natural Science Award and the 1st prize of the MoE Natural Science Award. He was selected in the "career influence" and "annual influence" list of the top 2% of the world's top scientists in 2023. He has successively served as the deputy director of the Robot Competition Working Committee of the Chinese Association of Automation, a member of the Intelligent IoT System Modeling and Simulation Professional Committee of the Chinese System Simulation Society, and a member of the Service Robot Professional Committee of the China Productivity Promotion Association. He also founded the International Underwater Robot Competition, which is the first international robot competition founded by a Chinese.
