IF? Records was established in Melbourne, Australia in 1995 firstly as a live gig and party organiser in the early 1990s and then in 1995 growing into one of Australia’s first independent local electronic music labels. Started by Andrew Bergen aka Little Nobody and now run by Sebastian Bayne.
IF?'s first compilation featured a line‐up of purely Melbourne based, mostly new, experimental electronic and techno producers. Mixmag editor Dom Phillips nominated the Zeitgeist compilations at #4 in his choice of the Top 10 Melbourne‐made records leading up to 1996. Zeitgeist (1995) and Zeitgeist 2 (1996) were repackaged and distributed internationally through Belgian label Nova Zembla.
IF? subsequently released a dozen CDs, tapes and vinyl EPs prior to the shift to Japan showcasing local Melbourne producers, such as Little Nobody, Zen Paradox, & Honesmack.The label has also released debuts, tracks & remixes by a who’s who of other essential Australian producers like Albert Chiovenda, Biz, Vohkinne, Sebastian Bayne, and the now famous PNAU.
Starting in the 1990s with German producers Thomas Heckmann & Jammin’ Unit, IF? has since worked with James Ruskin, Aux 88, Ade Fenton, Si Begg, Tobias Schmidt, Dave Tarrida, Wyndell Long, Dasha Rush, Luke's Anger, Donk Boys, Patrick Pulsinger, Dave Angel, Justin Berkovi, Ben Pest, K. Alexi Shelby, Paul Birken, Steve Stoll, BCR Boys, Bill Youngman, Justin Robertson, Jason Leach (Subhead), Steve Cobby (Fila Brazillia), Bas Mooy.
Come 2011 when Sebastian took over IF? where alongside releases, there was a renewed focus on the event organising aspect of IF?. From 2013-18 he produced or coproducing a slew of events & broke the following artists in Sydney: Paula Temple, Claudio PRC, DJ Pete, Norman Nodge, Marco Shuttle, Giorgio Gigli, Sleeparchive, Henning Baer, Luis Flores, Inigo Kennedy, Edit Select, Adriana Lopez, SNTS, Drumcell and Darko Esser/Tripeo. As well as touring hosting the Tresor 25 Years celebration in Melbourne & Sydney.
