About Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students' Association (IFUMSA)
The Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA) formerly known as Ife University Medical Students’ Association before the University was renamed in 1987 in honor of the Nigerian nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo, is the umbrella body of all Medical Students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. IFUMSA was founded in September 1972, by the foundation students of the Faculty of Health Sciences (now College of Health Sciences) which was established May 8, 1972. We are a vibrant student body with over 700 members and an associated illustrious Alumni Body. The 44 seat IFUMSA Parliament, comprise 10 Executive Council members whose activities are coordinated by the President of the Association, 30 Students’ Representative Body (SRB) members and 4 Ex-Officio members, is chaired by the Speaker of the House and is the highest decision making body of the association after the Congress. The IFUMSA Parliament and all members of the association are guided by the IFUMSA Constitution in a democratic dispensation. IFUMSA organizes several programs and events annually aimed at integrating freshmen; developing students’ potential for academic learning, creative expression and leadership; promoting research; diplomacy, recreation, scholarship, health outreach, charity, alumni reunion, recognition of merit and outstanding achievements. Members also receive their medical training via a unique Integrated Curriculum and Community Oriented Approach to primary healthcare delivery dubbed the Ife Philosophy that would go on to influence the World Health Organization’s Alma Ata Declaration of 1978, the same year our 35 pioneer students bagged their M.B.Ch.B degrees. Over the years, the activities of the association have evolved into the formation of Organs. The Organs of the Association are made up of various Clubs, Statutory Committees, Ad Hoc Committees and an Agency.
